Deepen Shah is a real estate, finance and acquisitions lawyer with extensive M&A cross-border experience having recently advised on acquisitions of targets in Kenya, Uganda, Mauritius, Tanzania, Zambia and Rwanda.  Deepen also advises in connection with DFI investments and project finance, most recently in the renewables space and in the insurance sector. 

Deepen is recognised as a leading lawyer by international ranking publications.  “He is absolutely excellent, reacts very quickly and provides comprehensive advice...” quoted Chambers Global whilst IFLR1000 praised him and his team for “...first rate advice with the responsiveness of a UK law firm.”   Deepen authored the Kenya Chapter to the 2019 edition of the Chambers Global Practice Guide on Corporate M&A and served on the stakeholder committee tasked with the preparation of regulations under the Companies Act, 2015.

Deepen joined the firm in 1998 and was admitted to the Roll of Advocates in Kenya in 2000.  He read law at the University of Bristol, graduating in 1997, before undertaking the LPC at the College of Law of England & Wales, London. 

Deepen’s recent experience includes advising: 

  • the AutoXpress Group in connection with an equity investment by Actis and their subsequent acquisition of Trentyre Uganda Limited from Goodyear SA, Luxembourg;

  • IFC on a USD 36.5 million project financing to Bidco Africa for a beverage and detergent plant and on a USD 100 million financing to Equity Bank (Kenya) Limited for on-lending to SMEs and WOEs;

  • I&M Bank Limited, DEG and PROPARCO in the acquisition of Banque Commerciale du Rwanda from Actis LLP
