Martha joined Walker Kontos in 2006 as a lawyer in training after completing her LL.B at the University of Nairobi and is a partner in the commercial and conveyancing department. Martha is a qualified certified secretary and registered under the Institute of Certified Secretaries in Kenya.

Martha enjoys practicing in the following areas -corporate and commercial work particularly in mergers and acquisitions transactions both local and cross-border, conveyancing and property law, financing, banking, employment and general insurance law as well as legal regulatory and advisory transactions.

Notable transactions that Martha has recently been involved in include:

  • Acting as the transaction legal advisor to the Kenya Mortgage Refinance Company (KMRC) in relation to refinancing loan facilities of up to KES. 3,868,136,060.00 advanced to two banking institutions namely KCB Bank Kenya Limited and NCBA Bank Kenya PLC, and to a mortgage provider known as HFC Limited in Kenya in order to advance financing for affordable home loans by the said institutions.

  • Acting as legal advisor to International Finance Corporation (IFC) in relation to provision of advisory services on Project Development – Power generation and distribution by private sector participant through financing and investment cooperation in various projects by IFC, the intended project being part of the Public Private Partnerships initiative of the Government of Kenya which, if implemented, is likely to be the first power transmission project brought about through a privately initiated proposal as provided for under the recently promulgated Public Private Partnerships Act (No. 14 of 2021) and the applicable regulations.

  • Legal advisor to China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation (SinoSure) in relation to the provision of advisory services on the assignment relating to Project Development – Road Transport entailing the review of the Project Agreement for compliance with Kenyan law, and more particularly with the Private Partnership Act, 2013 and the Public Roads Toll Act, Chapter 407 of the Laws of Kenya. The assignment required us to prepare a Legal Memorandum setting out the regulatory framework in relation to expressway projects under BOT/PPP model, the relevant competent governmental authorities and their respective functions, relevant key laws, regulations, and policies, as well as the legal framework for investment protection in Kenya; reviewing the provisions of the draft and final Public Finance Management Act (National Toll Roads Fund) Regulations in relation to the Project; including but not limited to the letter of support issued by the Government of Kenya in connection with the Project.

  • Acting for the shareholders of Power Technics Limited, Computer Technics Limited and Prisma Electric Limited as part of the legal team in relation to the sale of their businesses to a newly formed company and subsequently sale of the shares of the latter to Schneider Electric Industries SAS.

  • Acted as part of the Legal Advisory team to BOA West Africa, a company registered in Côte d’Ivoire in the acquisition of 80% of the issued share capital of Amalgamated Bank Limited, Ghana, through a share subscription and a transfer of shares of some of the existing shareholders.
